Help Cambodian Children

I'm hoping to raise $500 to purchase dental kits (toothbrushes, toothpastes & cups) for rural Cambodian children. These kits, administered at school, help students establish proper hygienic routines before class each day and safeguard against Hepatitis B infection (prevalent in a country where shared toothbrushing is common ).

My PLF Story

In 2011 I visited Cambodia and like millions of tourists I visited Angkor Wat, one of the wonders of the world. While millions of dollars flow into the gateway city of Siem Riep, outside of town, the effects of that economy are hardly felt at all. Siem Riep province is one of the poorest in the country.

By chance I stayed at the Seven Candles Guest House which is run by the Ponheary Ly Foundation, an organization which provides educational opportunities for thousands of children in this province. The owner of Seven Candles, Ponheary Ly, is an inspiring woman. She survived the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge and decades of civil war and has become a respected leader in child heath and well being. She has dedicated her life to ensuring children have access to education which she feels is key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

While I was there I could see the results of her work. The Foundation uses a holistic approach, focusing on providing concrete supports which enable children to attend school - access to bicycles and transportation, wellness programs, school uniforms and supplies and nutritional support etc.
